shopping

It’s the holidays already, which is crazy… but that’s another conversation.

Today I want to talk about how I save money and shop smart during the Christmas season! There are so many ways you can save when buying all those gifts on your list, and keep track of what you’re spending and what you have purchased/ still need to buy. I figured everyone knew about these shopping hacks but after multiple conversations with friends and family, ya’ll need the money-saving tips!

Here are my favorite hacks for shopping this season.

Me, thinking about all the money I'm about to save this holiday season
Me thinking about all the money I’m about to save

Ebates, now called Rakuten: Ya’ll listen. This is not a scam, even though it sounds like it is. You just go to the Rakuten website and then click on whatever website you want to go to through the Rakuten site. That’s it, that’s the whole process. Each site has a different cash back deal and it’s different every week. For example, say Ulta is doing 10 percent cash back. You go to Ulta’s site through Rakuten, shop, and check out. Then in a day or two you will get 10 percent of that purchase credited to your Rakuten account. You get a check every few months, or you can request it whenever you want. You can also use the mobile app or install the Chrome browser extension so you don’t ever miss a site that has cash back going on (that’s what I do!)

If you want to download, go here and you’ll get $10 to kickstart your account.

Retail Me Not: This is a website and app for your phone that gives you all the coupons and lets you know what sales are happening. Just type in the store you’re at, and then the site/app gives you all the coupons, sales, and deals at the store both in-store and online. Sometimes the older coupons towards the bottom don’t work (they’re expired and the page hasn’t been updated) but it’s still worth checking. You can also get the app to monitor your location and alert you when you’re near a store with deals or coupons. That way you don’t forget!

Santa’s Bag app: Ya’ll I love this app. If you’re Christmas/holiday obsessed like me, and buy a lot of gifts, you need it. You can set a budget and then log how much each gift you buy is, and the calculator will keep you on track and let you know anytime how much you’ve spent on gifts and how much you have left from the budget you set. You also can log each gift and its specific person, so you don’t ever lost track of what’s under the tree! I love this app so much.

By now you know, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is here. If you are a cardholder, you’re shopping now or you’ve already stocked up. If you are not that fancy (AKA me), our time is coming.

If you have no idea what I’m talking about or you live under a rock, or both, the Nordstrom sale is a huge deal in the fashion world because you get early access to new fall pieces for sale prices. It’s pretty legit, and you can make out with some really good buys for a price you won’t get again this year!

I feel like you have to have a plan going into this sale, like you have to do for Black Friday. While you will inevitably see things you want for a good price, you need to keep in mind what you need and go searching for those things— not get distracted by things you don’t need, already own, or will never actually wear even though its a good price.

Like on Black Friday, I make a wishlist of things I want/need before even approaching the site. While some things might be sold out by the time I can shop on Friday, I will at least have an idea of what I’m looking for and can hopefully find something similar.

I hope this wishlist inspires you for what to stock up on for fall, whether its N-Sale or not!

My picks for the 2019 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

1 Brown teddy jacket: I have a fuzzy teddy jacket that I adore and have worn a million times, but it’s a little more casual than this one. I know this is something I already reach for in the winter, so I would definitely be okay with spending money on a similar one that’s more formal.

2 Leopard tennis shoes: Leopard is still a thing, and I am here for it. I am a comfy over cute kind of gal always and tennis shoes are some of my favorite things. A cute pair (over my nasty gym pair) means I can wear them to work or on a date and not feel like a slob.

3 Sam Edelman knee-high boots: Knee-high boots are a staple, and I always tend to go for brown over black boots. I could wear these to work or out and pair them with any color jeans!

4 Steve Madden snakeskin booties: Booties are my favorite thing and something I wear year round. These snakeskin ones would be so edgy with denim shorts and a sweater during transition weather, and with black jeans and a hat in the fall.

5 Wool hat: The Brixton one I wanted was totally sold out by day two of early access shopping, which is a bummer, but this one is similar and I am loving the color! This is another good transition piece that can be worn with shorts or jeans and a tank while it’s still hot out.

6 Plaid shirt: You can’t live in the south without a plaid shirt. I never pay more than $20 for one, but I also can see the point of a more expensive one for better quality and softer materials.

7 Ugg slippers: I have wanted a pair of these FOREVER and I think it’s finally time for me to pull the trigger!

8 Cashmere ruana: During the cool weather, I usually opt for things like this over thick sweaters. I would rather wear several layers of soft, thin material than wear one big cable-knit one. I get hot easily and the thought of not being able to shed a layer when I walk into a heated building is terrifying to me.

9 White flats: To me, there’s a fine line in white shoes to make them not look like nurses shoes. But, I love the pointed toes on these! I think these flats would be perfect work shoes– either with nice dresses or pants. While I don’t own one pair of closed toe flats, I would be fine with these being the first.

10 Fringe striped scarf: Again, this goes back to my layering thing. I love the fringe detail and the color blocking. I know I would use this as a wrap more than a scarf, though!

I have an online shopping problem, but I also have a returning problem. I am so picky about my clothes and how they fit me, and one of my favorite things about online shopping is that I can try everything on at home and take time to decide what I truly love and will be able to work with other items in my closet.

I’ve gotten very particular about only buying clothes I know I will wear and get a lot of use out of. My typical week consists of work, the gym, time at home and a date night or girls dinner… so, I buy clothes that work for that. There’s no use in me buying pants suits or ball gowns, because that’s just not the life I live (right now!)

I thought it would be fun to show y’all what I recently purchased from Forever 21 and what I kept— and why I sent back what I did.

Here we go!

Keep in mind some things that I sent back were solely because they didn’t look like I wanted them to on my body. I’m sure they would work for hundreds of people, so don’t totally rule something out because it didn’t work for me!

For reference, I am 5’7″ and a 4-6 in pants, and I prefer an oversize fit with tops and sweaters.

Here’s a screenshot of what was in my order. I will link each item below!

forever 21 sweater, earrings
This is the poncho I ordered, paired with Spanx leather leggings & black booties. I’m also wearing my new hoops, but they’re a little hidden!

Earrings: Kept. If you know me, you know hoop earrings are basically my lifeline, and these are perfect to add into my rotation. They’re super lightweight, even though they’re huge! I love the colors for spring and summer, but I have also been loving the pop it’s been giving my neutral sweater looks for the winter.

Cowl Twist Front Sweater: Kept. This sweater is a dupe for so many expensive Nordstrom ones I have seen, so I knew I had to have it. The material isn’t top notch, but I didn’t pay top notch so I’m alright with that. I love the off-white color, and it fits pretty well. They also have this in gray!

Foldover Off the Shoulder Poncho: Returned. As much as I wanted this to work, it just didn’t do it for me. It was way too big, but that’s probably on me for ordering the bigger size, and just wasn’t flattering whatsoever. I also love the idea of off the shoulder things, but I find that I never seem to love them on my body.

Open-Knit Chenille Sweater: Kept. My mom actually bought this sweater last year and adored it, so when I saw it came back I knew I had to order one. This sweater is so soft and comfortable, it feels like you’re wearing pajamas. I probably should have gotten the medium, but I still love it. Sizing can be so tricky with Forever 21!

Brushed Knit Poncho: Kept. I was on the fence about this one but wound up keeping it, and I’ve already worn it several times. Again, this top is so soft! I dressed it up with a pair of leather leggings and black booties for a nice dinner (see pic), and I loved the way it looked. I think this is a great top to dress up or down, and can also take you into spring if you don’t wear a long sleeve shirt underneath.

Leopard Print Skirt: Returned. Again, I love the idea of this skirt but it didn’t work for me. The sizing was too big, but I was afraid getting a too small size would look gaudy in the print. It just didn’t work for me, but I think it’s a super cute skirt.

Do you like this kind of post? If so, I was thinking about making it a regular addition! Let me know!

It’s Christmas week and it’s time for holiday parties galore! Looking for some last minute outfit ideas? I’ve got you covered. The more sequins and the more red, the better!

If you’re not into the sparkle, opt for cute details like bows or ruching- it’ll jazz up your outfit and make you feel party ready. Some of my favorite places to shop for holiday outfits, or party outfits in general, are ASOS, Francesca’s, Free People, Revolve, and Red Dress. Most of the outfits linked below are from those stores too.

I added this glitzy gold heel as an idea, but any neutral or sparkly pump would work with these outfits!

Happy holidays and enjoy your parties!

1- Sequin Pencil Skirt

2- Free People Red Two Piece Outfit

3- Gold Sequin Mini Dress

4- Striped Sequin Dress

5- Perfect Glitzy Heels

6- Sequin Silver Top

7- Red Dress With BowFollow

It’s boot season ya’ll, and I love it so much!

While I typically opt for shorter, heeled booties, I went for something different recently and picked up these over the knee boots from Seven Dial. To be honest, the girl who did my makeup on my wedding day was wearing them, and I immediately asked her the brand and where she bought them because I knew I had to have them!

I only have one other pair of tall boots, and I knew I didn’t want to invest a lot of money in something I wasn’t sure how much I would wear, so I was so excited these boots were under $100.

I wanted to show ya’ll how I wore these shoes, since it seems like taller boots are so in season this year. I paired these studded OTK boots with my favorite leggings— the Spanx faux leather leggings. These are the BEST ya’ll and are worth every dime! My plaid surplice shirt is from beach lunch lounge. I love how loose it is, and how the shirt tail covers my back end. It’s easily one of my favorite tops for the cold weather, and I found mine at TJ Maxx!

Do you like tall boots better than booties? How are you styling yours this holiday season?

Hey y’all! Sorry for my absence lately, I’ve been slammed at my day job with some big court news. Keep up with me on Twitter if you’re interested in that!

But, I wanted to pop in and talk to you about one of my favorite activities— shopping! Y’all know I’m on a budget, and I think most of you are too. And, even if you’re not, why spend more money if you don’t have to?

Here are some of my favorite places to shop and some of my best tips per store.

Southern Style Diaries, Ivana Hrynkiw, clothes, shopping, budget

Happy shopping!

TJ Maxx: TJs is my goldmine and I could talk about it for days. But I’ll keep it short and sweet- check out every department, including the beauty and jewelry, for items up to half off store prices! You will find brands you never expected to be there, and save your wallet some pain.

H&M: My favorite leggings are from H&M. It’s one of the only places I can find leggings that are long enough and don’t shrink up past my ankles! Again, don’t forget their beauty aisle! Their makeup products are surprisingly high quality.

Old Navy: This is a great place for comfy basics like cardigans and workout clothes, and they also have an awesome selection of jeans. They have a huge variety of sizes, and their pants come in petite and tall. The Rockstar 24/7 jeans are my favorite!

Forever 21: I love keeping up with current trends, but I don’t want to spend a lot of money on something I’ll probably only wear for a year. Forever has the trendiest clothes, with a huge selection, and you don’t have to shell out money that you’d rather spend on a year-round item. Also, they have some amazing sandals for summer!

Belk: If you don’t have one, Belk is a southern department store that carries brands like Free People, Ralph Lauren, Sam Edelman, Jessica Simpson, French Connection and more. They sell shoes, makeup, accessories, and home goods. The best part— like most department stores— is they’re always having sales and giving our coupons.

Target: I have a love/ hate relationship with Target’s clothes. I always feel like they look so cute on the rack, but not so much on my body. Lately though I’ve really been loving their new brands A New Day and Universal Threads. I got two great work dresses from AND for just $7 and $13 a piece on the clearance rack! I also have two great button down shirts from UT that are so light and comfortable for summertime.

SheIn: I have a lot of thoughts on SheIn, but read more about that here. Overall, I think they *can* be a great source of cheap, cute clothes, especially for summer!

I love the holiday season for so many reasons, and one of my favorite things is shopping for that perfect gift for my friends and family! Nowadays, there are so many products shoved in our faces that sometimes it’s tough to figure out what the best gifts really are. I put together a gift guide of some of my favorite things to get for Christmas, so maybe it will help you figure out what to buy that special someone (or to ask Santa for!)

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays and Happy Shopping Season to all, and to all a good night!

Shop the gift guide

1- Mou Eskimo Sheepskin Winter Boot

I am slightly obsessed with these boots! The only thing I don’t love is the price point, so I’m working to find dupes on Amazon or a gently used pair on eBay. But, in a perfect world, I would have ordered these babies yesterday. A great gift for any woman is always a good pair of fuzzy slippers or comfy boots!

2- InkJoy Pens & Cambridge Notebooks
There is nothing I need more in life, or love, more than pens and a cute notebook to write in! Both my day job and this blog require lots of writing, and I am a person that would much rather write things down on paper than electronically.

3- Apple Watch

Truth, I asked my daddy for a gold Apple Watch with a pink band… I have a problem. But, everyone and their mother has an iWatch these days! I know, because my mom has one.

4- Nike Pro Warm Dri-FIT Leggings

Most of my days consist of going to work, to the gym, and home. If its not work clothes or gym clothes, I don’t need it! I have several pairs of exercise shorts, but I only have a few pairs of leggings that I rotate during the winter months for my workouts. I’m sure my trainers and my workout friends would really appreciate a few new, clean leggings.

5- Target’s Animal Print Design Faux Fur Throw

Every year I ask for a fuzzy blanket. I have never regretted it, and she won’t either.

6- Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette

I have fought the crowd so hard on this palette, but I’m close to breaking. It is just SO gorgeous! And, word on the street is, the colors are beautifully pigmented and have minimal fallout. Every beauty guru either wants this product, or already has it. Ya’ll know I love a good bargain though, and I have heard this Wet N Wild version in “Rose in the Air” is a complete dupe!

7- Copper Measuring Spoons

I have copper pots, an ice bucket, measuring cups, pans, you name it. They look beautiful hanging on my kitchen wall, and they’re useful too! The only thing I’m missing is copper measuring spoons… meaning I may have to buy these for myself.
