Christmas

It’s Christmas week and it’s time for holiday parties galore! Looking for some last minute outfit ideas? I’ve got you covered. The more sequins and the more red, the better!

If you’re not into the sparkle, opt for cute details like bows or ruching- it’ll jazz up your outfit and make you feel party ready. Some of my favorite places to shop for holiday outfits, or party outfits in general, are ASOS, Francesca’s, Free People, Revolve, and Red Dress. Most of the outfits linked below are from those stores too.

I added this glitzy gold heel as an idea, but any neutral or sparkly pump would work with these outfits!

Happy holidays and enjoy your parties!

It can be so challenging to eat well during the holidays.
I know when I am with my family and off my daily schedule, I want to eat like a trash can. And sometimes I do, but I wanted to give ya’ll 10 quick tips on how to stay healthy and stay (mostly!) on track with your eating during the holiday season.

I hope these tips help you! If you need motivation, feel free to reach out and we can do this together… in between Christmas cookies.

Southern Style Diaries

(Yes, my Christmas cooking tips all stem from Paula Deen!)

-Eat a fiber-filled, balanced breakfast. Those cinnamon rolls are fine once or twice, but try to start your day out with good carbs (like a banana nut muffin) and yogurt, or an egg sandwich and a fruit cup.

-Guzzle that water! If you’re like me and love a good glass of eggnog (or two), you need to make sure you’re staying hydrated and getting your electrolytes. A Gatorade is also good to add in, especially if you feel like you went a little too hard at the ugly sweater party.

-Divide your plate. At buffet-style gatherings, try to fill half your plate with veggies. Use the other two quarters each for protein and starchy dishes. Also, try not to up your serving size more than you would at a typical dinner at home.

-Speaking of veggies, try to bring a good veggie plate to your gatherings, so everyone can have a healthier option. My mom always makes a veggie and cheese board shaped like a tree for Christmas morning, and it’s gone within the hour! Check that out on my Pinterest here.

-Have a dessert rule. Try not to go for the sweets at every event– stop by the dessert table at one party, and skip it at the next.

-Eat your lean meats! Lean chicken and turkey are better options than a pork chop or a steak smothered in butter.

-And get in your protein if you aren’t into meat. Peanut butter is my go to for a good shot of protein if I need something fast between meals!

-Pre-made meals are your friend. I typically eat prepped meals throughout the week anyway, but it’s SO helpful during the holiday season, because things are always much busier than normal and it’s hard to find a healthy option. For lunch, they can be a lifesaver–either at work or doing last minute Christmas shopping.

-While I know I said this post was about eating well, I have to add this in: Get in exercise when you can! It’s really tough to make time for the gym when you have parties and family obligations, but everyone can fit in some type of exercise. Take a walk with your baby cousins, opt for the stairs at the mall, lift the heavy presents and carry them to the car. Anything helps, especially when you’re probably consuming more food and being more sedentary than normal. If you want some of my ideas for quick exercises you can do at home, click here.

-Don’t beat yourself up over a binge. It’s the holidays, for the Lord’s sake. Have a peppermint cupcake.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! I love decorating, and I especially love Christmas decorating. There are so many fun, inexpensive ways to light up your home for the holidays. Here are some of my favorites, and some examples from my home to get your creative juices flowing.

Wreaths and garland

This is a no-brainer for the holidays. Garland is a super cheap decoration solution- just pick some up at a Dollar Tree or Dollar General. You can literally use the stuff for anything: Decorate the tree, wind it around your banisters, hang it around your chandelier… I’m game for whatever. Wreaths can get expensive if you aren’t into DIYing, but if you are, go to your local craft store and pick up the vines and get the rest of the materials from Amazon or Walmart to save yourself some cash money (I made ours years ago!)

Table décor

These little mason jar decorations are some of my favorite holiday pieces- and they cost $2 to make! Buy these jars (not the Mason brand like these, but they do the trick) at your local Dollar Tree. While you’re there, pick up a sleeve of round ornaments. Usually, the rolls come with 5-10 of them, depending on the size. I chose the small, round balls in green, red, gold, and silver. Next, just take the top off of the jar and dump the ornaments in. It’s that easy! I made these for a Christmas party years ago, and I pack them away just like this so they’re easy to pull out for next year.

If you prefer the textured, quilted look, get a set of 12 here that will work just fine.

Candles or wax melts

Nothing says holidays like a good scent. My favorites are anything vanilla related, or something that smells like baked goods. Peppermint, pine, cedar, and cinnamon are more popular scents for the winter season. If you don’t like candles for the fear of leaving them lit by accident (guilty), try wax melts or oil plugs. Pick up nice candles for less at a HomeGoods or T.J. Maxx; grab holiday wax melts here in a set of 10 for $8; or use a Bath and Body Works coupon to buy wallflower scents for next to nothing.

Stockings

While Mitri and I don’t make stockings for each other, we do make stockings for the dogs. Judge me if you will, but it’s actually one of our favorite things about Christmas Day! We get all the dogs together in the living room and dump their stockings out in front of them. They have so much fun and it makes our day better knowing that they feel loved! You can make great stockings with just a few yards of fabric and decorative pom-poms, but if crafting isn’t your thing, you can buy a few for just a few bucks. Try the Dollar Tree, Hobby Lobby/Michaels, or get cute embroidered stockings here (3 for $20!)
